Recipes from a Singapore kitchen

I’m a freelance food writer, recipe developer, and stylist based in Singapore. My entire career has revolved around food, which is fitting, because I seriously think about food all day long. And I’ve got the biggest appetite out of anyone I know. I always make a ridiculous amount of food when I host a party, and if you ask me to bake a cake for you be assured that it’ll feed double!

After working in restaurants as a pastry chef for a while after culinary school, I opened a bakery and cafe called Desserticus, in Stanforville NY. I miss filling the case with swanky cakes, but being the owner and chef of a place that made everything from scratch was a ton of work, not to mention the drama. (Freezing pipes, midnight runs to the local grocery store for flowers to decorate a wedding cake…). The five years of that passed in a blink and then I was off to Boston, where I entered the publishing business at America’s Test Kitchen. There, I worked as a test cook and writer for Cook’s Illustrated magazine, and then as an associate editor in their photo department. While there I also filmed three seasons (2010, 2011, 2012) of their Emmy nominated cooking show, America’s Test Kitchen TV, which was a blast. During this time I authored my first cookbook, The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Easy Artisan Bread.

So after dividing my life between New York and Boston, I got married at the end of August 2011, and by September 1st I arrived in Singapore. It’s hot! Currently I’m writing a weekly “Chocoholic” column for Serious Eats, so my kitchen has been overflowing with desserts! Other than chocolate (which is an obsession),  I’ve been completely inspired by the cultures, foods, and ingredients now at my disposal here in Asia. I plan on eating and cooking my way through the 3 years that I’ll be here in Singapore. I’m not going to weigh myself, but I am going to practice my imperfect Mandarin at the local markets.  If I can just get used to metric…

    Thanks for writing ‘The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Easy Artisan Bread’…the smells and tastes it has created in my home have been great in reagrds to taking me back to the days when my Mom & Grandma would bake bread.
